Shooter Comments: "Don:
Just got the samples of your 105 and 108 gr VLD 6mm bullets today. They look very good. I weighed them all on my Pharmaceutical Scale from Denver Instruments, which is capable of + or - .02 grain accuracy, and they were quite uniform, with a standard deviation of the 108's at 0.0568.
This was a little better than a similar sample of Berger 108's that I also checked.
I would like to order 500 of the 108 gr bullets." Neil Adams Billings, MT
"Don,
I sent a couple pictures for you to look at. A picture of my rifle , 6mm BR, and a couple targets. The targets are 5 shot groups at 100 and 200. I know it's not 600 yards but it gives you some idea of what the rifle can do.
Federal Premium Primers 105gr VLD (Pricision Ballistics) Lapua Brass 30.6 Gr. Varget 10 Thou. off lands 2875 Vel."
Randy Koop Plymouth, MN "Don, Got out to do some early testing with the 80 grain pills. I hit on a load with the third charge weight that gave me low .2's. Adjusted seating depth to .011 jam and got several mid to high .1's. That's awesome for this rifle. I'm extremely pleased with your bullets, and your attention to detail...up to and including the packaging. Keep up the great work, and I wish you well. You make a great bullet."

"Don, Just wanted to give you a quick report since your bullets are now being used, and I must say it looks very promising! I am still playing a bit with seating dept, so far 5/1000 into the lands has worked the best for me. Tried 15/1000 into the lands but that was no good, 10/1000 was just OK. For me it seems like just into the lands is the best with my current Lilja barrel and your 66 FB. Picture attached is best 5 shots today, around 3 millimeters or 0.120" (a bit shaded but had to use my mobile phone). Just for tuning that is promising for me."

"To Don Lahr at Precision Ballistics June 18, 2009
Don, I just finished a pretty good “wringing out” of your 66 grain 6mm bullets, and thought I would pass along the info to you. My 6 PPC bench rifle is on its second barrel and I’ve tried bullets from Berger, Gentner, Sierra, Hornady, and Bart’s. For the last couple of years I have shot mostly Bart’s and on a good “trigger pulling contest day”, Paper Tiger (the name I’ve given to my rifle) will shoot into the mid 1’s. It’s a Kelbly made Kodiak action, Kreiger barrel, Kelbly trigger , a March 40X scope and one of my Mahogany stocks. So, on June 12th, God gave us a “trigger pulling contest day”, you know, NO wind and NO mirage and overcast, and I took advantage of it. Three groups (all of these are 3 shot groups) with Bart”s Ultra 66 grainers at .113. .184, and .161 for a .1526” average. Not too bad! Then your Precision Ballistics 66 grainers, 6 groups at .122, .160, .162, .151, .106, and .058 for a .1265” average. Even better.
My next test came on June 17th, with conditions the exact opposite. . . crosswinds at 10-15 mph. I watched the flags carefully and managed to shoot 2 groups with the Bart’s at .262 and .164, average of .213”. Your bullets posted four groups at .212, .307, .162, .127 for an average of .202”. That’s when I called and ordered 2000 of your 66 grainers. Thanks for making a good bullet."

"Don, I have been testing your 80 grain Boat Tails the past two days. I just thought you might be interested in some of the results. On Tuesday in my 6mmTOAD, 1:12" twist, 28" barrel, Hall S action (having almost 2000 rounds on it already), I shot a 5 shot group of .257" at 100 yards and a 3 shot string at 365 yards of .600". and on Wednesday a 3 shot group of 1.5" at 492 yards. This bullet consistently averages 3606 fps with 8 fps MD (mean deviation) with 46.0 gr. H-414 in five shot groups from my 1:12" twist 6 TOAD, Hall S. FYI, my calculations for BC of this 80 gr. BT bullet, from field testing at 4 different yardages (100, 246, 365, & 492) results a .330 BC. The adjusted BC for the non standard atmospheric conditions during the tests result actual BC going up to .395. I derive this from the ballistics calculator program which I use for all of my projections and settings. I can't swear that it is correct, but it sure looks like it. I have been doing this testing in preparation for the VHA Jamboree match next month. Have decided to shoot this bullet in this gun in one of my custom class entries. It is an incredible performer in the 6TOAD, 12" twist!" Dave Todd Zionsville, IN
“Don, I sent you an e-mail a couple of weeks ago about my problem of getting your 80gr. bullets to group well in my 12 twist 6br. You suggested I try different seating depths, and powder charges. I seated into lands, and off lands(two different for each). I varied n-135 from 30.0-31.5gr. at different seating depths. I have now shot 71 of the bullets and still have had nothing that groups very well. I'm wondering if I should try some of your 74gr.BT bullets instead of the 80s. what do you think? I still have a full box(100) of your 80s, and 29 in the first box. I will send them back to you, in exchange for the 74gr.BT if you think they might be a better choice for me. Also, I purchased them at the Super Shoot and I think they were discounted in pricing from your norm. Please let me know what you think."
Terry Beaver Newark, Ohio
Terry... Sure, I'll gladly swap you a box of 74gr BT for the box of 80gr BT. Just keep the others for foulers or give them to someone else. I have several guys who swear by them in their 12 twists so they probably just don't like something about your barrel...they do that sometimes. The report on the 74s is that they are "spot on" so hopefully they will make just the correct internal harmonics for your barrel. I do not have your shipping address so pass that along and I will just send them right out. Tomorrow unless they are closed for the holiday. You pay shipping on your end, I'll pay shipping on my end and the bullets will just play switcheroo without any money changing. If your gun still doesn't like the 74s and you want your money back that's OK too. Some rifles just like a certain bullet and no others, and I understand that perfectly. For me, it's more about you finding a good match than it is about the money. Don Lahr http://PrecisionBallisticsLLC.com
Hi Don, It's Terry Beaver sending you a quick note to let you know that my first outing with the 74gr. BT bullets you sent me worked very well. I loaded four different loads using Varget powder at the following. 1) 30.5gr. 2)31.5gr. 3)32.5gr. 4)33.3gr. The groups got better as I increased the charges, until the 33.3gr. load shot one hole at 100yds. I then took it to the 200yrd. range and shot a three shot group under .50". I THINK MY RIFLE LOVES YOUR 74GR. BT BULLETS, AND VARGET POWDER. THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE.” Terry Beaver Newark, Ohio
"Don,
At my last match, the Swedish National Championship, your bullets performed very well. I have attached one of by record targets from the Swedish National Championship, measuring 3.62 mm (around 0.140'') which was the second best group in HV100 that day." Roy Arnie Syversrud Norway
On Friday, following the 2009 VHA Jamboree at Pierre, SD, the IBS State Championships were held. My friend, Dave Todd, on the left, shot this great 1.739" group with my 80gr boat tails from his 6Toad at 600 yards. Proof that 105gr pills are not required to do the job at 600 yards. Dave is a phenomenal shooter, and a Heck of a nice guy! --- Don "Don, Attached is an annotated photo of that target I shot at 600 yards with your light 80 gr. BTs from my 12 twist 6 Toad this past Friday." "Don, Attached is an annotated photo of that target I shot at 600 yards with your light 80 gr. BTs from my 12 twist 6 Toad this past Friday." I just returned from the World Championship Long Range Groundhog Match held in Sidman, PA September 26th and 27th. While there, Thad Gibbons brought over some of his recent targets shot at 100 yds, 300 yds and 500 yds, which document this winning shooter's abilities. Here is a picture of Thad and I at Southfork Rifle Club for the World Championship and a nice close-up of his 300 yard target he shot with my Precision Ballistics 68gr FB bullets. Congratulations Thad! Thad shot this at 300 yards!
Above are a couple of targets my friend, John Maxon shot with my 66.7gr FB bullets. The top target was a .101" and the bottom one a .132". Those Paper Tiger guys can really shoot!
"Don,
Shot this morning at the Elwood Conservation Club. Not sure how good the picture is. The 5 shot group @ 100 yards measured an honest .132". Broughton 12 twist barrell, HS Precision factory Remington stock. 27.6 N135, 80 grain FB DON LAHR (Precision Ballistics) bullets. MV is 2854 fps. See you on the range Wednesday around 10:00 or so." Dallas Walker VHA Area Coordinator
I had given my friend, Jay Fruth, from our club in Wabash, IN, some of my 68gr FB bullets to try. He loaded some up to try them in his 6PPC, which he'd pretty well shot out, and proceeded to shoot a 0.184" group (left) and a 0.121" group (right) at 100 yards. Jay seemed pretty pleased and gave me his targets to post.
"Hi Don, I just had news from Jean Pierre Troin, who shot a varmint match for score last week end (first time for him) in difficult winds. He won clearly above the best local specialist using your 66gr BTs. At 100m he scored 500/500 with18Xs. At 200m he scored 499/500 with 8Xs. He took 1st at both 100m and 200m, and 1st at the aggregate. We have now to test them for groups, but they seem to have a very good potential. Thank you again.
Kind regards," Pascal Fischbach France
I received a note and two targets from Ken Winpisinger, who had tried my 88gr FB bullets. He shot these two 3/4" groups through wind, mirage with no wind flags. Nice groups for 200 yards!
“Don, Here are two groups I shot with your 88gr flat base bullets at 200 yards. The conditions were not great, a little wind and a fair amount of mirage. I didn't have my wind flags up either. This is a big improvement over what I've been shooting. I will call you to order more bullets.”
Ken Winpisinger Parsons, WV
Please note the two targets on the left were shot at 200 yards, 7 shots grouped at 0.387" and 8 shots grouped at 0.409". The target on the right was a 5 shot group at 500 yards that was 1.009"! Looks to me like the groundhogs around West Virginia are in big trouble with Ken shooting my 88gr bullets! "Don, I have some more targets for you. Your bullets are very, very good. Much better than my old load. I tested some of the boat tails, they work just as well as the flat base bullets. On the white target (on the left), two shots went a little high. I started to get some vertical mirage. Still seven shots under a 1/2" on one target, and 8 shots under 1/2" on the other." Ken Winpisinger Parsons, WV
"Hey Don, I had the opportunity yesterday to test the 74gr BT on a coyote. I was more than pleased with the outcome. Despite a few fragments that came through, the bullet came apart inside the coyote. No exit wound to speak of. I shot the coyote at 180 yards and it dropped like a brick. I do want to shoot another, but shoot it on the shoulder where there is some bone to contend with. In past experience with shoulder hits, there is bullet splashing and the coyote gets away. We are planning an outing next Monday and will test it out for sure. I will also be testing it on a deer hopefully this week and will let you know how it performed." Thanks, Jeff Rheborg Director of Operations, VHA "Hey Don, Thought I'd give you a little report on the 90 grainers vs. deer. They work. The attached photo is evidence of their effectiveness. This is my son, AJ. This deer was taken at 200 yards. The cartridge was a .243 Winchester. The deer was quartering slightly toward us. The bullet entered the meaty part of the front shoulder and then proceed to blast through the rib cage. Upon inspection of the carcass, we discovered that the bullet opened up a 1-1/2" entrance hole with no exit wound accept for a couple fragmentation lacerations. The lungs were mangled. The chest cavity was full of blood. The deer dropped within 10 seconds of being hit. Tony Dorschner Director of Advertising, The VARMINT HUNTER Magazine® Vice President, The Varmint Hunters Association, Inc.
Here are a few of my targets shot with my 6mmBR, with my new 13.5" twist Bartlein barrel that was skillfully installed by Mark Penrod at Penrod Precision, shooting my 66gr FB bullets. Mark is a great riflesmith! Don Lahr Bulletsmith
On one of the many shooting websites I visit several shooters have used my bullets and were discussing them. I asked if they would mind me posting some of their comments here and they gave their permission. Well today I have been blown away by the repetitive accuracy of some new bullets. Chris had drawn my attention to these little beauties and he very kindly agreed to let me try some, and boy oh boy do they shoot!!! Recently I have become frustrated with flyers in my PPC and 6BR[12”T] and generally only adequate grouping using 75g Vmax in particular and in discussion with others they too have been getting unexplained flyers and mediocre performance with anything in the very frangible ballistic tips range ie V Max.
Anyway the added attraction for me was that the bullets were my favorite weight, given the 12 twist, they were a boatail and that they have rather an open meplat for hopefully good and instant expansion!!! We'll see about that in the near future!!!
Back to how they shoot, see for yourselves. I had to adjust my zero on both rifles and finally arrived at the groups on the left of the picture, job done both rifles set for extended play but that must wait for another day, can't wait.
All groups are three shots and not one flyer amongst them. I did shoot more than this but they were at odd 308 holes on the targetboard and not one, I repeat not one, strayed completely outside a 308 hole!!!!
These groups were shot without any load development Too!!!!! Good bullets in my opinion don't need much anyway.
Get in line guys!!!
Dave
They do what it says on the box, Dave.
Martin
Only Berger bullets come close to this. I have done the testing, and if you want tight, then this is it.
Dave
Dave Glad you like them and great pics I went testing with Nigal last Sunday with his new 6BR Lawton/Krieger stick and we too watched poorish groups produced with the 75gr V-Max load that Nigal had put together in comparison the 74gr Precision Ballistics bullets shot right out of the box, with NO load development!! Don't take my word for it, talk to the others that have shot these bullets. They just "shoot for fun". Chris
Yeah, seriously impressed with these bullets. Gonna have to try the flat bases next to see what they can do. I would say that in perfect conditions and good equipment, these products would stay in the .0's!!!! or very low .1's.
Dave
When I tested a box of 74BT's earlier this year, it wasn't so much the accuracy that I could achieve as the explosive effect they had on small quarry. Most effective load in my 6BR was Lapua brass, CCI br4 primer, 31.3gr Viht 133, seated around 30thou out in a Pacnor 1-8.
On one farm we can take rabbits and occasional crows at 200-350yds, when the bullet makes contact with the target it makes one of the loudest pops I've ever heard and starburst's the rabbit or crow.
We found bits of rabbit up to 6ft up the hedge.
On impact they remind me of the Speer 50gr TNT's I used to use in my .223, but having an even more explosive nature.
On fox they left gaping wounds and so I never tried them on deer, presuming they may only be suitable for head or neck shots, so never bothered to load for the .243AI, because at the end of a possibly long and arduous stalk you may only be able to take a body shot and I feel they may lack the ability to penetrate sufficiently for larger deer.
Superb match or vermin fodder though.
Pete
That's exactly what we want from a varmint bullet...pinpoint accuracy, and atom bomb detonation on impact....
Martin
Don
I have just gotten back from the local 100m range and had been plinking with your bullets in my PPC. You know it's really odd to keep shooting down that same ragged hole again and again. Nothing ever wanders out. My follow through regime is getting quicker [too quick] being eager to see if it went in there again!!! Unreal. Anyway better go. All the best.
Dave
Don So far I have loaded 12 rounds using your 68's and I am seating them 10 thou off the lands. So far whilst checking every loaded round using a Stoney Point oal guage and digital calipers I have noticed less than 1 thous difference in length. This is amazing, now I can see why hand made bullets are used for matches. Well done to you Bughole, for such consistancy! Mark
Don,
We met last year at the "Toadwalk". I was fortunate enough to win a box of your bullets. They produced the best groups I've ever shot with my 6mm BR. I'd like to order 200 74 grain boat tail to shoot at this years event. Thanks!
